What Is Ellacor® and How Does It Work?
Ellacor® is an FDA-cleared treatment for addressing moderate to severe wrinkles on the middle to lower face. The device is made up of hollow needles that move up to four millimeters into the facial tissue and precisely remove thousands of microscopic columns or “microcores.” The small amount of skin removed is below the threshold for scarring, so there will be no lasting marks.
This is the first and only cosmetic device that removes skin on the microscale. It works similar to fractional laser resurfacing in the sense that bridges of normal skin are left intact in between the microcores.
The micro-injuries caused by Ellacor® encourage collagen production, the skin’s natural healing function, and tissue remodeling. This may seem similar to microneedling, but it is important to note that the two treatments are not the same thing. Microneedling uses tiny needles to cause pinpricks in the skin, resulting in a controlled injury that stimulates collagen production. Skin is not removed. Instead, it is temporarily displaced.
Patients usually only experience minor discomfort during an Ellacor® session. You will be given local anesthesia and a numbing cream before the mechanical handpiece is moved methodically over the treatment area.
No laser, heat, cold, radiofrequency, or ultrasound energy are involved, and there is no intentional thermal injury to the skin. On average, a single Ellacor® procedure will be completed in just 30 minutes or less.
Who Is a Candidate for Ellacor®?
Patients aged 22 and older with Fitzpatrick skin types I-IV who want to treat moderate to severe wrinkles or mild to moderate sagging skin will be ideal candidates for this skin rejuvenation treatment. It can be ideal for anyone who wants to reduce lax skin or younger individuals who want to delay having a surgical facelift. Patients who have had dermal fillers in the treatment area within the previous six months, are pregnant or nursing, are taking high doses of blood thinners or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or have a history of keloids, hyperpigmentation, bleeding disorders, anesthesia allergies, and autoimmune conditions should not have this treatment. If you have skin cancer, birthmarks, open wounds or sores, or facial implants in the treatment area, you will need to consider a different strategy from Ellacor®
Which Areas Can Be Treated with Ellacor®?
Ellacor® can target mild to moderate laxity and sagging on areas such as the jawline, cheeks, jowls, and chin. Patients commonly get this treatment done around the cheeks, around the mouth, and below the chin.
What Happens After an Ellacor® Session?
There will be no visible scarring after this treatment, since the stainless steel needles are very tiny. There will only be a few days of downtime. Most patients are comfortable with resuming work and their normal activities within three days. Although everyone’s experience is different, the majority of patients will achieve the best results by having three Ellacor® sessions spaced 30 days apart. The skin gradually becomes smoother and tighter when it heals, with very natural-looking results.
Which Other Skin Rejuvenation Options Are Available?
Ellacor® should not be thought of as a scarless facelift or an alternative to facial plastic surgery. Although non-surgical skin rejuvenation techniques can provide some improvements, the results will not be as dramatic as those from a facelift. That said, unlike Ellacor®, a facelift won’t rejuvenate the skin itself, but it can help reshape facial contours.
