Skin Resurfacing Nashville
Aging beyond our prime years is never easy. Our looks are one of our most important defining characteristics and often define people’s first impressions. Because of the emphasis on looking and feeling good, we as a population spend billions of dollars each year on the fight against old age.
This is why Dr. Unger, and the team of trained professionals offer skin resurfacing treatments to rejuvenate the appearance and bring back that youthful glow to your skin.
Most often, the signs of aging begin with our skin. Ultraviolet rays, heredity, and lifestyle factors including diet, alcohol, smoking, and other drug use may contribute to facial wrinkling. Over time, our skin begins to change pigments in certain areas, which can create blotchiness or brown spots. Battling years of acne through adolescence or even in adulthood can cause permanent damage to the skin, leaving it uneven with scars.
We offer the Cynosure® Icon™ laser for laser skin resurfacing. Only the Icon has the patented Skintel® meter that precisely monitors melanin levels in a patient’s skin and automatically adjusts the settings on the laser. This technology feature assures a level of unmatched safety.
This non-ablative fractional laser treatment works by removing the top layer of skin, or the epidermis, and penetrating deep into the papillary dermis. This in turn responds by producing new collagen to reverse the aging process.
Before receiving any treatment, you will first go through an initial consultation. This process opens up the pathways of communication between patient and practitioner. Patients can point out areas of the face they would like to focus on, and Dr. Unger can offer up details about skin resurfacing while discussing all of your available options.
Your skin type, the severity of any sun damage, the extent of uneven pigmentation, and the depth of skin imperfections will be evaluated. In addition, this is a great time to disclose any concerns you may have.
Good candidates for this procedure are those struggling with any of the symptoms previously mentioned. The procedure is good for nearly any age.

Once you’re cleared for treatments, you will be administered either general or local anesthesia depending on the preferences and the amount of surface area being treated. Local anesthesia is typically adequate.
Fractional laser treatments create tiny wounds in the skin layer using brief pulses of laser energy. The heat from the laser vaporizes about 20 percent of the skin to significantly reduce the appearance of wrinkles, blotchiness, and other skin irregularities one layer at a time.
One of the main benefits is that it also stimulates the growth of new collagen and elastin, which are both critical for youthful-looking skin.
After treatments, your resurfaced skin may be covered with petroleum jelly or other protective ointment. In some cases, dressings, tape, or a bandage will be applied.
Though the results are immediate, patients can optimize the effectiveness of the treatment by arranging five to six sessions spaced a couple of weeks apart. Over time, the spike in collagen growth will continue to yield noticeable returns.
