Alter the Inner and Outer Vaginal Lips in Nashville, TN

BODY

Every woman’s labia are unique, so there is no “one way” the vaginal lips are supposed to look. Many women find, however, that their labia do not have the shape, size, or appearance they want for their own bodies. This can occur especially after experiencing childbirth, which can cause formerly small labia to grow in size, change color, and become pronouncedly asymmetrical.

Large labia can also occur as a result of hormones or be congenital—that is, present from birth. Labiaplasty at Nashville’s Nashville Plastic Surgery Institute is a surgical procedure intended to remove excess tissue on the labia minora (inner lips), the labia majora (outer lips), or found around the clitoris (clitoral hood reduction), all with a goal of making the lips more balanced and improving sensation in the area.

Dr. Unger and the NPSI team are highly experienced in women’s health procedures, allowing us to give each labiaplasty patient a personalized experience and results that reflect their unique style and self-image.

As a surgical procedure, labiaplasty involves meticulously removing small amounts of tissue from the labia to reshape and resize them. The two main options are “wedge” and “trim” techniques. The trim technique takes away a more significant amount of the labia minora, while further minimizing the risk of complications. Trim labiaplasty is also ideal for excising darker pigmented tissue, and it tends to heal very well.

The wedge technique involves taking a V-shaped section of tissue out of both labia to reduce volume, then suturing the edges together. There are some advantages to this method, especially in terms of its relationship to the clitoral bulb, but it does leave darker-pigmented tissue, which some women want to be removed.

Labiaplasty may also involve the removal of fat cells below the surface, using liposuction to decrease volume as desired.

The procedure can take an hour or two on average, with the patient choosing either local or general anesthesia. The majority of these surgeries occur under local anesthesia. No overnight stay is required, so patients can return home after their surgery.

Labial Volume Enhancement

Some patients have dermal fillers or their own harvested fat cells injected into the labia to improve shape and symmetry. Although labiaplasty is typically about reducing volume, the ultimate goal is to create a natural look. For this reason, NPSI may employ multiple techniques—including labial volume enhancement—to achieve results.

The effects of fillers typically last anywhere from six months to a year, depending on the patient. The results of fat grafting can last longer, since the body recognizes its own living fat cells, but women who choose this option may need periodic maintenance treatments in order to enjoy a lasting effect.

Talk to Dr. Unger and his experienced team about whether labial volume enhancement, labiaplasty, or a combination of the two would be best for creating the look and feel you want.

What Makes a Good Labiaplasty Candidate?

Women who seek out labiaplasty often used to be happy with the look and feel of their vaginal lips, but were dismayed to see changes over time as babies were born, hormones fluctuated, and skin aged. That said, some women have never been satisfied with their labia for as long as they can remember. These are called congenital changes. Either way, it is important for women considering the surgery to be sure they are doing it for themselves—not to cater to someone else’s standard of beauty, or desirability.

Common reasons patients cite for choosing labiaplasty include dissatisfaction with inner vaginal lips that protrude past the outer lips, unwillingness and inability to wear tight-fitting clothing due to bulky and potentially visible labia, discomfort due to chafing when cycling or jogging, chronic yeast infections and related discomfort, and diminished feelings of sexiness due to how the labia look and feel.

What Happens After Labiaplasty?

Although the labia are in an especially sensitive area, they typically heal very well after surgery, with some women returning to work or similar daily activities after a week of recovery. Only three to five days of bed rest are typically recommended. It is important, though, to refrain from vaginal intercourse, heavy lifting, and generally strenuous activities for about four to six weeks.

What Other Procedures Are Available for Women’s Health?

Childbirth and aging frequently impact more than just the labia. To address vaginal laxity and related problems, Dr. Unger offers vaginoplasty surgery for vaginal rejuvenation. Women can also get G-Spot enhancement injections consisting of fillers that add sensitivity-increasing volume. The O-shot describes injections of collagen induction (derived from your own blood) to enhance stimulation around the clitoral region for external stimulation) and the G-spot as well. Dr. Unger and his team also perform labia volume enhancing procedures including fat grafting and filler, mostly to the outer lips, to enhance and rejuvenate the appearance of this area.

Given that many patients seeking labiaplasty and these treatments are mothers and women with other concerns, they can be combined with other treatments—including breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, tummy tuck, and liposuction—as part of a Mommy Makeover.
